Opera
Are you an opera-lover or have you never seen an opera but would like to know more about the artform?
In both cases, the Opera Study Group is for you.
Twice a month we come together and watch an opera, in whole or part. Group members take it in turns to prepare an introduction to the Opera. This will be short (5 – 10 minutes) and completely free-style. The introduction could focus on whatever the member preparing it likes, such as the history and time of writing, musical aspects, the libretto (storyline), something about the performance or the singers. Then we watch the opera and have a chat at the end. Some operas may need to be covered over two sessions.
Convenor: Wim Oosterhoff
Em: wim@sound-advice.co.nz
Timing: 9:30am to 11:30am, 2nd and 4th Friday.
First meeting in 2026 is Friday 13 February.
Location: Plateau Centre – Pukeko St, Parkwood Village
Update from Wim – 19/2/2026
After a very successful screening of the opera Rusalka – hardly ever performed but very beautiful – we decided to go completely the other way and will watch “My Fair Lady” over the next two meetings. It is too long for one session. Not really an opera but a musical, but we are flexible.
The first half will be screened on Friday 27 February at 9:30 in the Plateau Centre at Parkwood. Please contact Wim Oosterhoff – – or just come along! We ask a Koha to cover the costs of room hire.
You need to be a financial member of U3A to participate in an Interest Group. Please wear your badge when you attend a group meeting.
